I enjoyed this well enough for what it was, and I appreciated the concept behind it: a series of very short fictional stories based on the same writing prompt. The execution was fairly uneven, however, with some of these being really evocative despite their short length, while others tending to come and go without leaving much of an impression. It would be really difficult to make every entry here as impactful as the best of them, given the very short length allotted to them, so the ones that did work are all the more impressive. The entries from Brooke Bolander, Kameron Hurley, and Catherynne M. Valente were probably my favorites.

Are you tired hearing me saying 'this story collection is uneven' or the variation of that? Well, get ready coz here comes another one.

Just kidding. Wait, no I am not. There are some I truly enjoyed, like the ones by Maria Dalvana Headley and Catherynne Valente, but some stories my brain just could not process.

Glad I read this finally, thanks to the buddies at the Worlds Beyond the Margins group who let me nominate it for our weekly short story (which apparently could include a novelette, yay). I had it for two years in my shelf.

Nevertheless, keep persisting in reading this collection! It comes for free and only took 15 minutes or so.

Worth picking up for the excellent group of authors all giving a flash fiction take on "Nevertheless, she persisted." And, it's free.

Read for International Women's Day!

Flash fiction is something special. It is so extremely short, the words that are put into them must be powerful enough to carry an entire story. For me, it was the first such collection I read, and I had some troubles to feel the stories because of their length.

Mind you - I am someone who actively had to learn how to read novellas and short stories because I always used to think they were way too short. Flash fiction is just taking it to the next level.

This collection is all about powerful women, and all stories are built around "Nevertheless, she persisted." Concept great of course, but stories too short to really stand out.

Really appreciated the theme of the book, though some stories were a bit heavy-handed. Especially enjoyed the last 2: “Anabasis” by Amal El-Mohtar, and “The Ordinary Woman and the Unquiet Emperor” by Catherynne M. Valente.

The fact that these are so short plays against them. I feel like most of the authors weren't able to convey enough in such a short space. Some of these are good premises for a longer story, but not enough on their own.

However, there's a story I loved: Anabasis, by Amal El-Mohtar

Other stories I enjoyed are:
- Our Faces, Radiant Sisters, Our Faces Are Full of Light! by Kameron Hurley (I'd love to see this one a bit more developed)
- Persephone by Seanan McGuire (same)
- The Jump Rope Rhyme by Jo Walton
- The Ordinary Woman and the Unquiet Emperor by Catherynne M. Valente

This is a very good collection of flash fiction all centered around the lines " Nevertheless She Persisted" that reflect a cry for people of all genders in recognition of the struggles that women have faced throughout the history.
Some stories I liked a lot, some were ok and others I didn't like, but that happens with all collections.
Overall it was a good one and I am glad I read it.
