There were some wonderful bits to this book that really elevated it for me. The characters, morrigan’s somewhat gothic personality, the feelings of finding a place where you finally belong .. the whimsy….they were all there. What kept me from giving a five star rating, was that world felt a little too unreal. Perhaps less grounded is a better way to put it. I can’t really paint a picture of nevermoor outside of that hotel. But overall the book was wonderful. I did really enjoy reading it, and it has definitely earned a place in my heart.

The best middle grade fantasy since Potter! Jessica Townsend's writing feels like a warm blanket, and these characters sheeesh! It was all extremely well thought out.

My only gripe is when you meet HIM, the scene falls a bit flat. I hope book 2 is higher stakes!

I actually had already read this book a few years ago, but, completely unlike me, I couldn't remember anything about it except "it was good." So, I decided to pick it up again and give it a try. And I am SO glad I did.

This book is both action-packed and sensitive, introducing us to Morrigan Crow's new world while constantly reminding us of Morrigan's predicament as a cursed child and how that would have affected her psychologically. On the back of my copy is a review calling it a "Harry Potter-esque adventure," and honestly, I think that's doing this amazing novel a disservice. Morrigan as a character is extremely interesting, and her situation is so well-written that even though I truly wanted to believe everything would turn out okay for her (knowing there is a sequel) I still felt her own anxiety and worry as my own.

The only reason I'm not giving this book a full 5 stars is because despite how thick it actually is, I feel it's a little bit rushed. It's called "The TRIALS of Morrigan Crow," and while it can obviously refer to her personal trials, it also does refer to the trials she has to undergo in order to join the Wundrous Society -and unfortunately, despite how important those trials are to the plot, many of them feel extremely rushed through. Only one of the four trials felt appropriately paced to me; I really would have liked to really feel Morrigan's struggle through them. The final trial, especially, is something of a let-down even though it's explained later.

Still, this book was a highly enjoyable read. I tabbed so many pages and quotes, and this is definitely in my Top 10 middle-grade reads.

A great start to the Nevermoor trilogy. i love that we jump right into the story with Morrigan's life about to end an the adventure is non-stop from there.

Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
