This series filled my need to read a 2010’s teen fantasy.
The plot definitely deepened in this book and although I enjoyed the story, I wish there was more explanation and example of the magic in this world.
Kaden had the most character growth throughout and I am so glad for that!
Probably won’t reread but it was fun! The prose is well-done, especially considering this book’s target audience!

Although this wasn’t my favorite of the series, I’m gonna miss these characters and world so much. Pearson does an amazing job transporting you into the story, and I cannot wait to jump into Dance of Thieves next.

This is a full review of the whole trilogy. I read them on audible & enjoyed all the voices for the most part.

I really enjoyed the series overall. The pacing was pretty good for the most part & the world building was really in depth and you could really see the differences between all the sights and kingdoms. The characters were well executed & easy to lik or hate depending on who we're talking about.

However it is definitely a typical YA book, in regards to the way it was written. Some of the main characters are so irritating because of their naive nature and inability to think things through logically for more than 5 minutes even with some of the most obvious or mundane things. Although I gave this a little bit of a pass due to the fact that they're all just teenagers and are simply behaving correctly in accordance with how they were written. Of course they are going be naive & impulsive when their frontal cortex hasn't even finished developing. I do think that they're needs to be more stories like these written with actual adults 22 + to see how differently the situations would be handled.

The plot was pretty predictable to the point that you could tell some big "plot twists" were going to occur from the beginning of the book like the Pauline pickle or the aster situation. That being said I still actually enjoyed the ride for the most part but maybe that's because I'm a solid pro revenge kind of girl.

I also actually adored the way you don't know who is the prince and the assassin in the beginning. I'm happy to say i shipped her with raif from jump even though I thought he was the assassin for a while. I'm going to move on for now but I might come back to the prequel in a few months as that sounds so good.
