This book and this series has and is a consistent 4 star book.
It's got everything you want from a Sullivan book - amazing characters, witty dialogue and great writing. Why you might ask do I not give it 5 stars? Quite simply the overall point of the series/book isn't that interesting to me - it's basically about a war between humans and elves. Yes I'm being simplistic but when you boil it down that's what we've seen so far and I guess I want a little bit more in order for me to bump from 4 to 5 stars. Don't get me wrong, I would recommend this to anyone and always look forward to reading the next in the series but (sad to say) it's not Riyria.
Not going into the plot because not only do I not want to give anything away but also because Sullivan is hugely popular so I'm sure thousands of others will dissect the plot piece by piece.
Very good book. Not great but still very very good. Go read it.

I came out of the first few books thinking that the more "normal" side characters, namely Gifford, Roan, Brin, Moya, and Suri, were far more dynamic and interesting than Raithe, Nyphron, or (to a lesser extent) Persephone. As far as I can tell, Sullivan seems to agree with me, given that those characters have slowly become the leads of the series and now fully drive the plot forward.
The direction is less clear now but I'm enjoying where the second half of the story is going, as evidenced by the fact that I read this thing in less than two days.

Ugh a cliffhanger
Normaly, all of Michael J Sullivan's books have a good resolution even though they are part of a series. But not this one! I was reading it on my kindle and it showed I was only 85% complete so imagine my shock when the book suddenly ends with a massive cliffhanger! (The rest of the ebook is a preview of one of his other books).
I shouldn't be too disappointed because the next book is already out and I can start reading it immediately. But this makes me really glad I didn't read the book when it first came out.
But ok, enough of my bitching this is Still be fantastic book and continues the story in a really intriguing way.

This entry in the The Legends of the First Empire series is a really enjoyable read, an engaging version of the classic fantasy quest, with enough variety and twists to keep it flowing smoothly. Love spending time with most of the characters. Looking forward to the next books in the series.
