I really do adore Wilde's way with words and I highlighted so many passages because they were just so good, but I'd lie if I said I didn't expect more, mostly in the sense that plot wise, the last third dragged on and felt repetitive. Even when I understand Wilde's intentions to be more reflective rather than providing us with a story full of action, I had hoped to see a little bit more of Dorian's moral descent. Sadly it's more tell than show, and I would have loved to go more into the intricacies of why so many people grew to loathe him to the extent of leaving a room when he enters it. Regardless, I'm incredibly excited to explore more of his work, and I do think I will revisit this in the future because again, god his prose is delicious.
I read this as part of the Mass Center for the Book's January reading challenge, "Read a book that you have read before that you may feel differently about now." I read this as a 14 year old freshman in high school and think that it went WAY over my head -- I remember not enjoying it and finding it dull. More than 20 years later, I can say that I enjoyed and appreciated it SO much for as an adult. I found it funny, engaging, dark, and devastating. Perfect pick for this prompt!

"¡Palabras! ¡Simples palabras!

The version as Wilde had intended. Of course it is even better than the one published.

The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely.
All art is quite useless.
