I don't usually read non -fiction, but when I do I usually choose books about war. This one was interesting and covered a subject I know very little about; World war 1. Of course I knew there was a WW1 but it occurred so long ago I never gave it much thought. One item I found interesting in this book is the fact that European powers were all basically planning if not hoping for a war long before it happened. And the fact that they (leaders) let it happen is beyond my comprehension. Another interesting item is the upgrading of the railway system in France, Russia and Germany, in the years prior to the war, which was stated to be a part of this war plan. What better way to ship troops to the front lines than by rail. An interesting book and it has piqued my interest to read more about WW1.

1913: The Eve of War is a good, short introduction to the events that lead up to the First World War. I enjoy political, social and cultural history much more than strictly military history and this definitely fit the bill. The author has a distinct point of view and has written the book as a rebuttal to the popular idea of Europe "sleepwalking" into war.

Pretty good writing on the events that led to the outbreak of WWI. There are some very interesting thoughts in it. This is a Kindle Single (only around 100 pages), but it makes for a good read in one go.

Short summary of the pre-war situation focusing on the belligerence of all parties while simultaneously professing the inevitability of the coming conflict. At once gearing war machines up for a fight they look forward to and feeling victimized by circumstance as if bound by the ties of fate to fight.
