This is my last read for this year, and I can't think of a better way to close the year. The epigraph from Bolano's Savage Detectives tells you the grand theme that drives the book: the search for an author. Unlike Bolano, which had the energy of a fever dream, this text is more insidious, moving slowly and deliberately (this could also be because French slows down my reading, and I had to pause to look up words). Apart from the theme of searching for an author, the novel asks questions about what it means to write, what does it mean to be a writer from Africa, the literary marketplace, colonialism and the linguistic subjects it fashions and most importantly, memory and history. It was a challenging read, but one that I truly enjoyed. Highly recommend, and I can't wait to read it again in translation (so that I understand the stuff that I missed because of the limitations in my French)

Een boek waar je echt voor moet gaan zitten en dat je niet met een half oog in de trein kan lezen. Maar als je dan gaat zitten, is het mooi, confronterend en doet het je nadenken over wat ‘nieuw’ is (schrijven we in de literatuur ooit wel iets écht nieuws?). Vooral genoten van de meer mystieke passages en hoofdstukken.

pfffff !!! alhoewel ik soms een beetje moeite had met het taalgebruik (dat voor mij soms te duidelijk vertaald was) en de seksscenes (mannen stop alsjeblieft met schrijven over een “stijve pik”), was dit echt zo mooi en spannend en fascinerend! echt een hele interessante manier van vertellen en een prachtig einde <3
