The book does a great job outlining de jure (or, by law) segregation of African American/Black people in various policies created, enforced and practiced by the U.S. government and/or local governments. The book to me was very engaging the whole way through though it is detailed and deep and some may consider it dry. I think, for me, it was not dry because I spent time reflecting on the people impacted and so I thought of it somewhat of a sad story.

TLDR: very informative about how America shaped the segregation of African Americans in white neighborhoods. Sometimes it felt like there was too much information to ingest and I wish there was some insight on what was happening to other races that weren't white at this time.

This book is very information heavy, a slow read for me. I was excited to read this book to learn more about how the US made this country segregated and there is very good information about how this happened. This book is heavily centered around how laws that were created to segregate African Americans but I also wish there was some info about other races handling segregation in America. Overall, I think some information was repetitive and there could have been areas to expand more but if this happened, I think this would have the book even more information overload.

While this book wasn’t the easiest read - particularly seeing how pervasive the segregation has been and how obvious it was - I feel like everyone should read it. It paints the tragic history of housing segregation so unflinchingly, but also in a way that is easy to follow and digest. Highly recommend - leave some time for reflection when you’re reading too.

This was a disturbing, infuriating, and necessary read. If you haven't picked this book up yet, you should.

This book does a great job organizing the legal history that led to the perpetuation of racial segregation in the United States. Various examples are given of legal rulings in different states that had long term implications for black and Latinx people for generations to come. This includes both maintaining black people living in poorer parts of the country as well as preventing them from advancing socioeconomically. I appreciated that there were also thorough explanations for how loopholes for found for laws and mandates that were passed to protect the civil rights of black people. The book draws connections that aren't the most intuitive and makes you think critically about the implications of historical decisions. It also really makes you think about how laws passed today can have consequences for generations to come in the same way as in the past. This book is concise and informative and provides a great point of reference for anyone interested in racial history in the U.S.
