This was a book that I enjoyed reading. I think Meyer's writing style is more fairytale inspired than fairytale retelling. I would say this book was a combination of prophecy, romance, Victorian-era gender roles, and the weirdness that can only be found in Wonderland.

Before I review this book I have to be honest, Iā€™ve always been a fan of Alice in wonderland and Iā€™ve always hated Marissa Mayer.

This is one of the best books that Marissa Meyer ever wrote and I did enjoy this book, eventhough I expected to hate it with everything that is me. What makes this book better then all her other books?

Characters
The characters of Marissa Meyers heartless are done well I guess. In the beginning of the book I took offense to the mad hatter. By the end of the book he became a bit better but heā€™s different from what heā€™s supposed to be. That doesnā€™t have to be a bad thing but she took away from his character. Which is a shame since heā€™s one of the most important characters in Alice in the wonderland. Jest was more like the mad hatter is supposed to be than the mad hatter himself.

Storytelling
The book starts fun and ends good but the middleā€¦.. Jesus, that shit was LONG AND BORING. The middle part of the story was a merrygoaround of the same plot and that wasnā€™t wat I was looking for.

Writing
The writing is done fine, Marissa Meyer is able to write a fairytale but sheā€™s just not clever enough to make the plot.

Worldbuilding
The worldbuilding was a spin on the original book with her own magic touches. I didnā€™t mind the changes.

I would like to recommend to check the triggerwarnings. There is a lot of fatphobia in this book.

I finished this, but at what cost? I think I was expecting dark whimsy and I didn't get any of that at all. I wanted more romance between Jest and Cath. I wanted her to make a real decision, and when she did make a decision, I wanted it to work out. I knew it had to not, but I wanted to be given hope that it would. Instead, she did the one thing that she was told would lead to the "bad ending" and she did it anyway. My expectations were high and I was left wanting. The only way this broke me was in my willingness to take book recommendations from people I don't know.

While yes, I did enjoy reading this book, it also let me down. I mean, the second I added to my TBR I knew it would be sad and I knew it was almost 500 pages, so I thought I would fall in love with the characters and then sob. But when characters died, I wasnā€™t that sad. In the end it just felt wasted, especially with people I know who have amped me up for crying with this. And though I know it defeats the purpose of this book, I wonder if it would have been better as an original story set in Wonderland instead of a Queen of Hearts origin story. 3.75āļø
