funny reflective

I am in my McNish era! McNish’s poetry is the perfect blend of witty and sharp, and heartfelt and wise. It’s a balm in the heart when you are an overthinker by nature, and want to remind yourself what important is almost always not what is being forced upon us. That I look at my friends and see nothing but beauty in what they feel are imperfections and that politicians talk a lot of shit, and actively make worse the things they are about to blame on minorities hit the hardest by these problems. That loving your children doesn’t make parenting perfect, but her love for her daughter shines in all the poems she writes.

I adore the melody in her poems and love to read them aloud to really feel the words forming in my mouth. I feel like I would love to be able to express myself like that.

I liked this the first time around but I have now read it for the third and final time. I like the sentiment and the ideas behind the poems but they seem too simplistic to me now. For me, a poem is a bit like a song: if I can get everything out of it after just two or three encounters, it's not very interesting and I won't revisit it.

I enjoyed this collection, honest, open, topical and accessible. I also enjoyed the flow of the book, with Hollie sharing some poems from early childhood, through her teenage years and into adulthood.

A collection of throwbacks for the British. I especially loved the parts about the importance of language and vocabulary in creating equality.

I absolutely love Hollie McNish’s spoken word - fans of her spoken word will probably enjoy this too.

This collection is a memoir, featuring poems from her childhood, adolescence and beyond. I loved the poems about motherhood and parenting - I would love a few prints of these for my house.

I think it lost a few stars because it didn’t wholly blow me away. It was enjoyable, but other than a few select poems, I can’t say I’ll be coming back to this.
