compulsively readable, fiercely written, and simmering with an intricate cursewriting system. the invocations was engrossing the entire way through — i love anything to do with witches and/or queer horror — and the three leads won me over by the end. the prologue is one of the most descriptive, atmospheric pieces of writing i've read in a while.
one pitfall i will point out is this book's gratuitous violence. there's an excessive amount of blood, gore, and vomit meant for shock value, but i felt that some of it wasn't needed to tell the story and reduced the impact of the finale. also, the romance between jude and emer felt sudden and jarring to me, in part because i couldn't imagine emer with anyone given her reclusive childhood and the way she talked about love in a detached sort of way. overall, though, this is a strong book; i'd recommend it to fans of salem-witch-trials-inspired female rage who don't mind every single male character being a traitor in some way.

Loved the themes. Only thing keeping it from 5 stars was reading it in the spring instead of fall, and I wish it had ended in a poly relationship instead of Zara going off on her own.

Absolutely loved this book. Such a good feminist, sapphic horror. The atmosphere Sutherland creates is just amazing.
If female rage was a book, it would be this book. The prologue beings with a girl walking homme in the dark. Every woman’s nightmare, right?
In a world where women can exchange part of their soul for power, where witches hide, we follow three girls, Jude, Emer and Zara. One is trying to uncurse themself, another to resurrect their dead sister, and Emer? Well she’s just caught in the middle of it all.
For me, this wasn’t necessarily anything show-stopping. I loved the message it sent, found the writing readable and even very humorous in parts. The plot was fast and twisty, and I really enjoyed and binged in a day but I don’t think it will stick with me.

Obsessed! Love this raging feminist witchy book. It was very fast paced. Sometimes a bit predictable but didn’t mind.
“You’re a goddamn vegan influencer!” This line made me laugh. Loved the bit of humor throw in.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC
