There's a lot to love about this book. It's creepy! It's atmospheric! It's gory and horrible! Truly enjoyed it. On occasion the characters felt a little like a caricature, and Zara's desire to bring her sister back to life was... a lot. But overall very good, good allegory for the way women have to move through the world on edge, good HORROR.
Working my way through my physical tbr a little bit. Bought this one on a whim bc of the cover and was immediately bored. The writing is super repetitive and stunted in a way that almost made it hard to follow at points. I’m now scared to read House of Hollow, which sucks because I was really stoked for that one (and it’s also on my physical tbr 🫠).
This story is dark. From the beginning the descriptions of evil: smells and textures, are visceral and, at times, overpowering. The 3 main characters all have reasons to hide but together they uncover an even darker evil that is killing women.
More could have been made of the lack of empowerment that might lead a woman to ask for occult assitance, but the message is there if you look for it.

It simply didn’t grab my attention and the parts that did (descriptions of internal bodily rot) grossed me out.

very memorable, amazing storytelling with chilling twists and a tale that you will be left thinking about for days afterwards
Sometimes I just wanted this book to get to the point but it was fun and I really liked the characters and the magic system and the ending:)
