This was a particularly worthwhile read. Irvin Yalom has yet to disappoint. I would recommend this to fans of his writing as well people interested in the themes it covers, which include Spinoza’s life, religious politics, and making difficult decisions in life.

I started reading this one immediately after finishing The Schopenhauer Cure, having loved the latter. That's my mistake, when I like an author, I binge on his works and eventually I stumble upon one that is not as awesome as the others and I get slightly disappointed.
It's still a good book, but I had a hard time finishing it, due to the philosophical part being a bit too long and a bit too repetitive. I do like philosophy, but in a challenging and concise form...this book doesn't challenge much, Spinoza's ideas are pretty much common sense today.
One thing I was left with after finishing the book is this very real ethical dilemma of a therapist: how do I help my nazi pacient achieve the most he can achieve in his life, while simultanously discouraging him from following his strongest life-long antisemitic ambition.

اروین یالوم نویسنده ی معمولی ایست، البته معلم خوبیست و به همین دلیل نوشته هایش خوش‌خوان هستند. ساده، منطقی که اصلا پیچیده نیست، الگوی تکرار شونده، توضیح دادن همه چیز، شخصیت هایی با آی کیوی در حد امکان پایین، گره های داستانی ای که در خط بعد باز می شوند و در نهایت چپاندن حرف در دهان شخصیت ها
در یکی از فصل ها فرض های ابتدای کتاب «اخلاق» اسپینوزا آمده و زبان به شدت پیچیده اسپینوزا دیده می شود. در فصل دیگری بخشی از یکی از نامه های او آمده و توانایی زبانی او قابل توجه است، اما این ها در هیچ کدام از مکالمات کتاب دیده نمی شود به جایش اسپینوزا آدمی ست مثل همه ی ما که به سادگی مسائل را بررسی می کند و دوستی دارد که چند قرن قبل از فروید، با اینکه نمی داند، مشغول روانکاوی است
آلفرت روزنبرگ هم پر از عقده ست، عقده هایی که به وضوح رفتارهایش را شکل می دهند. در مدرسه نه چندان باهوش است و دوستی دارد که به تازگی در رشته نوظهور روانشناسی تجصیل کرده است و هر جا به اندازه ی کافی مسائل واضح نیستند برای توضیح دادن، ناگهان به داخل داستان می پرد
توصیفات داستان بی اهمیتند بدون هیچ ارزش زیبا شناسانه ای، اگر روی میز ناهارخوری توصبف می شود، از این نان ها داشتند و از این ماهی ها و شراب نمی خوردند و پنیرشان نرم بود، این میز در داستان هیچ تاثیری ندارد ولی به هر حال داستان که نمی شود در فضای خالی جلو برود. آقای یالوم اما در تعریف کردن اتفاقاتی که واقعا افتاده اند مثل خلاصه دادگاه نورنبرگ، یا انتظار ظهور منجی نسبتا خوب است
به عنوان جمع بندی می توانم بگویم که برای استراحت کتاب را می توانید به سرعت بخوانید، کتاب از این بابت خوب است

Full disclosure: I picked this up thinking it was a non-fiction account of Baruch de Spinoza and the appropriation of his ideologies by the nazi theorist Alfred Ernst Rosenberg. I was taken in by the cover art and a snippet of a back cover synopsis that I didn’t read in its entirety. Now that I’ve read Yalom’s The Spinoza Problem, I have no regrets.
So little is known about the specific reasons for Spinoza’s seventeenth century excommunication and Rosenberg’s twentieth century Spinoza obsession that perhaps imagination (call it speculative fiction) is the best way to hypothesize and rationalize it all—kinda like how religion soothed our curiosity about the universe before the invention of the telescope and the microscope.

Néhány könyvet már olvastam Yalomtól, ez most nagyon más volt. Nehezen fogtam újra a kezembe minden letétel után, de aztán beindult. A két szál egyrészt érdekes volt, főleg amikor kezdett összekapcsolódni, de ugyanakkor ki is tudott zökkenteni, és emiatt is lehetett, hogy kicsit döcögősebben haladtam vele. Voltak benne szokásosan nagyon érdekes gondolatok, történelmi visszakekintések, már ezekért megérte. Nem ez lesz a kedvenc könyvem tőle, azért a 4 csillag.
