let it be known that this is not a perfect book by any means. but I loved it in spite of its flaws because of how the overall story was told and all of the ways it took different subjects and ideas and forced you to reckon with them; and THEN remember when you're in a marriage, its not just you you're accountable for. to state the obvious these are two very traumatized people who fell in love and did the best they could with what they had, showcasing their very best and what they wanted the world to see in them. boom one day you're 15 years in and the veneer fades and the things you liked now annoy you and why are they so NEEDY all the time? I like how this book dissected the relationship in the past and the present, and examined how their careers intersect with their innate needs for both of them to feel secure.
Elizabeth's work on placeboes was so captivating and I truly thought I had an original thought once upon a time, but this book asked some really great questions about the ethics around placebo studies; namely, is it ethical to conduct them for people who are in pain because you know they can actually feel better based on their brain power alone? Jack's situation with his father and watching someone fall in the algorithmic swamp of conspiracy theories was also so interesting, and you can really see how easy it is for vulnerable folks to convince themselves everyone else is the problem (much like brandie thinking that "positive vibes" will stop bad things from happening lol)
TO be sure: they both should have been honest with each other a long time ago, but its easy to sit here and say that whenI know the reality of wanting your lover to see you in the best way/capable/etc is much more palatable. Vulnerability is like touching a hot stove when people in your life who should've protected you intentionally hurt you. but ultimately it is the thing that closes the gap, as wide as it may be. IDK guys, i just loved it I can't say why it won me over so bad but I obviously have so much to say about the whole thing.

Seems to be quite all over the place. Sometimes it moves, other times seems like a bare skeleton with no filling.

A true modern love story.
This was thought-provoking, well researched, and absorbing. There are so many deep dives into varying aspects of psychology centred around a love story. These days I usually read to escape, so reading about a marriage that was feeling strained seemed like a strange decision. This was actually pretty heartwarming and tackles so many issues people face today. It’s a long read, but I was never bored, and found myself highlighting so many passages.
