“What she discovered, after she began asking questions about her subject' home lives and careers and wordviews, was that people were, in general, totally confused and overwhelmed and tired and worn-out. They lived in a landscape full of despair and distrust, a world with toxic sludge seeping into the groundwater, particulates hanging in the air, oceans full of micro-plastics, a sky swamped with carbon and radiation, a food supply awash with pesticides and filler and garbage, doctors who had no time for them, politicians lying to them, PR flaks lying to them, TV journalists lying to them, unsatisfactorily employed, hopelessly in debt, one medical bill from bankruptcy, and nobody protecting them from any of it, government regulators in bed with the corporations they regulated, the powerful protecting the powerful while all the little guys suffered. And listening to these stories, Elizabeth decided that believing in fad diets or mystical chakras or energy crystals was actually a pretty rational and sane response to systemic colapse: If nobody else was going to protect you, you had to do the job yourself. You had to believe in something. You had to find, somewhere, hope.”
This book is 600 pages and not even enough. Wellness is unlike any book I’ve ever read and dare I say, my favorite ever. It’s insanely smart, deeply painful, beautiful in a physical sense and literary sense, relatable, and proverbial. It’s the American Gothic painting, “7 Fishes” from The Bear, “Stay golden, Ponyboy” from The Outsiders, and the people on Instagram you hate all in one place. It’s you. It’s me. It’s your highest and your lowest. Your pride and your shame. I’ll never stop thinking about it. Text me when you read “The Unraveling.”

There were a lot of aspects of the book that I loved. The deep dive into the ebbs and flow of marriage felt so true and familiar. Both characters were flawed and yet quite lovable in their neuroses which really had you rooting for them in their marriage and struggles. The first half was better paced, the second half was at times interesting in the detailed set ups, but also started to take a turn toward being rather tedious to read.
