Sometimes there were chapers that did not speak to me or weren't relatable to me. But oh my god sometimes there were moments of relating so intensely to this book it felt like going to therapy.

Jack is a farm boy transplant to the big Windy City. Elizabeth is running away from a childhood of relative privilege and worse. They find themselves opposite each other in an artists' district of abandoned warehouses cum apartments, and they can see into each other's windows from across the way. This voyeuristic theme sets the tone for the book. As the lives of these two collide into dating, marriage and family, there is a tone of foreboding, and I took a long time processing this book. That is, I read it slowly. The sense of impending doom for these two was overwhelming, and yet I kept going back. Hill is a clever observer of the human condition, and I loved his first book The Nix. I trusted this author from the very beginning, and I was richly rewarded with so much plot and character development. Don't get me wrong; this is not an easy read. There is a lot of suffering and endurance that is revealed. Hill laid out plenty of wrath here as he skewers everything from sex clubs to private equity firms to higher education. Savor Hill's shrewd eye for the cultural and iconoclastic. Meanwhile if you find yourself feeling a little contempt for your own ways, know that checks out for me as well. It's like a good cleanse, you walk away a little wiped out but pretty sure it was good for you.

Too literary for me.

3.5 stars rounded up. There were parts of this book that were quite boring and felt a bit disjointed. However, once everything came together it was really beautiful.
