The characters were decent, however, I just couldn't get past the continuous present tense in this novel. It just bothered me for some reason in in prevelance

I'm not sure what to say about this book. I couldn't put it down, but the characters were hard to believe if I stopped reading for a second and imagined them in real life. Certainly not the "portrayal of modern family life" as the back cover reads. Fascinating, but over the top. I also did not love the expected ending. I think I couldn't put the book down because I was hoping for a different ending than the one I got.

Fascinating and truly captivating. A bit spooky and very magical as well. Touches on the hard stuff, religion, family, mental illness, the whole shebang.

A beautiful, beautiful book, and not just because I knew Myla in college, either. The characters are cracklingly vivid, and the slow revelations of each family member's deepest secrets and yearnings are heartbreakingly gorgeous. It's extra delightful to read if you've ever been in a spelling bee.

This book started off so promising and then just became a strange compilation of little scenes featuring a family (frail to begin) losing itself as each member slowly descends into a personal downspin and disconnects with their own reality or self-definition.

This short book packed a lot into its pages, like how a small family can hold immense complexity. It was a fascinating study of how parental expectations of their children affect both the parents and the children, among other topics. This is the kind of book that I’m glad I read but also feel depressed about upon finishing it.
