chanel miller puts indescribable thoughts and feelings into words. it is so extremely clear how much she cares about bringing comfort to survivors through her writing.

“i always wondered why survivors understood other survivors so well. why, even if the details of our attacks vary, survivors can lock eyes and get it without having to explain. perhaps it is not the particulars of the assault itself that we have in common, but the moment after; the first time you are left alone. something slipping out of you. where did i go. what was taken. it is terror swallowed inside silence. an unclipping from the world where up was up and down was down. this moment is not pain, not hysteria, not crying. it is your insides turning to cold stones. it is utter confusion paired with knowing. gone is the luxury of growing up slowly. so begins the brutal awakening.”

chanel miller, it is so tragic to read your story, but wonderful to hear from the point of view of someone who is so well written. i can’t even imagine anything being deniable to a victim blamer after reading this book. i cried real tears reading about your journey. the importance of reclaiming one’s self is what every young girl needs to hear.

This book is amazing. She writes the most intense memoir I’ve ever read. The way she can write her feelings onto the page is just awesome. This should be required reading in high school freshmen English classes for everyone. I could go on and on about everything I loved about this book.

Chanel Miller tells her story with such courage, grace, and emotion. Her writing was beautiful to listen to. Her narrative is a great testament as to the many things wrong with our justice system and society as a whole. Everyone needs to read this book so that they are shocked, horrified, and able to acknowledge all of the bias that goes into so many court cases/defenses, especially sexual assault and rape cases.

I have no words for how brave and resilient the author is. She handles such a horrible time in her life with so much grace and shares her story so pointingly. I felt her pain and her frustration as I listened to her read the audiobook.
