Minus 1 star because of David still being alive at the end of the book
it really surprises me every time a book this bad gets published. like how did it pass editing and revision?? how did it even make it onto the shelves??
maureen johnson tries too fucking hard to write a "quirky/relatable" teen character, but ultimately fails in the end. i know what she was going for here, a female teenage character who's obsessed w/ true crime for the girlies who listen to white women rave and gush over real life murder/serial cases, whose victims' families are very much alive and being re-traumatized by their bullshit. she ended up writing someone just as callous and weird, and whose obviously autistic but she refuses to even say the word for some fucking reason. and, yeah, i get it, sometimes we don't choose our special interests, but dont be weird about it ffs.
johnson also tried to make the school into this rlly cool unique place that feels like a college campus, but also fails at that, too. there are zero adults supervising these kids, and yet they try to act like they care about their safety. how has this school even lasted?? the magic of the plot, i guess.
also, how have I not seen someone mention that this is literally fucking "ant farm" from disney channel but make it dark and edgy???? it's literally that fucking show, which makes this look like really terrible fanfiction.
speaking of terrible fanfiction, this book and the previous one ([b:Truly, Devious|29589074|Truly, Devious (Truly Devious, #1)|Maureen Johnson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1498501619l/29589074._SX50_.jpg|49916452]) sound and read like they belong on wattpad but somehow escaped its clutches. and although there are amazing books and stories on wattpad....this is genuinely not one of them.
also what the fuck is david's problem????? idgaf about your daddy issues and neither does anyone else, stop acting like a cunt for pity. like....*sigh*
alright im done ranting.
im still gonna read the 3rd book, tho, bc im not a fucking quitter

4.5 because DAMN YOU CLIFFHANGERS.
This was way better than book one. Book one was good but was heavy on the exposition whereas now we are in the heart of the mystery. There are five books in this series but, if I’m not mistaken, 4 and 5 are standalone stories. However, 1-3 ARE NOT; this is a trilogy divided up into three books that DOES NOT CONCLUDE ANYTHING IN BOOKS 1 AND 2. I say this because, while it’s fun, make sure you have access to all three books if you’re going to read it.

Im completely hooked with the series... the writing makes it easy to follow along and even though the characters don't have a good development the story makes you keep going on its own.
This isn't a normal murder story because the back story is richer than what meets the eye
