Binti is the first of her country to be chosen to go off planet to university, it doesn't go well for the ship.

It's really short so not much else to say without being a complete spoiler outside the synopsis.

this book has great potential and AHH I wish it was full-length novel! the integration of Himba culture with sci-fi was absolutely incredible, and I really liked the aliens in this story, the author did a great job making them feel actually, y'know, alien. still, the plot felt too rushed even for a novella, so the events happen too fast to have any emotional impact, and the worldbuilding was really cool but felt kinda too bare-bones at times, rarely going into as much detail as I wished. considering the thing that bothered me the most was that the world wasn't explored in enough detail, i'll definitely be picking up the other two books, especially since they're both longer, so hopefully won't feel like they're moving too fast. this feels like the sort of trilogy that should be read and judged as a whole.

4.5

Okay I need the next two books in this trilogy!

Binti was such a nice surprise. I read this book without knowing anything much about it and was pleasantly surprised with what I read. From the writing, to the characters, to the world-building, they were all so wonderful. I definitely need to know more about their fictional world though, I'm so curious about it—imagine it, humans and aliens interacting and co-existing with each other.

I loved the subtle suspense and thrill of the story, and I also loved how Binti's culture and customs were highlighted in the story. I hope I see more of it in the next books.

Exact rating: 4.5 stars!

I tried to listen to Binti on audio last year but struggled with some of the unfamiliar vocab I decided this was one of those books I need to read. I'm so glad I picked it up because this was an incredibly interesting novella/short story. Weaving Himba culture in with the beauty of mathematics and master harmonizing had me fascinated. Also, the ships are somehow partially organic and that blows my mind.

My main complaint is this story deserved to be longer. My greedy reader-self wanted a deeper look at harmonizing and treeing.

Even with wanting more, I definitely recommend if you are looking for a quick, fascinating YA sci-fi that blends futuristic elements (think breathing ships, diverse alien races, and advanced electronics) all with Himba culture and a strong, Black female lead. I'll definitely be picking up the rest of Binti's story to see where Okorafor takes their readers.

Given I was taking part in the 4 Nations Readathon round for July, I needed a book that fit a 'one word' title prompt and remembered that I wanted to read the audiobook. Plus it made sense as well since I wanted to finish this book come August as part of a yearly goal and as part of The Final Book Support Group's 48hr Readathon round. So, I grabbed the book off Scribd and tucked in for a re-read. I knew already that I enjoyed this book — my rating for the Kindle Edition was 4/5 stars — yet I didn't expect the audio would jump my rating up an entire star. The narrator does such an amazing job that it felt like a fresh read. While the content of the book is powerful, and Binti's journey definitely traumatizing, you feel all the things Binti does more strongly due to the emotions that comes through in Robin Miles' voice. A testament to her skill. I was excited to continue on, and finish, this series before, but I'll definitely be doing it on audiobook going forward.

Fabulous character development and enough world building to spark imagination. The plot was straightforward and interesting, and the turn of events made sense. The author didn't try to do too much nor leave tons of loose ends, which can often happen in such a short piece of work but this was well done. Really enjoyed it and looking to the next in the series.
