Combining baseball and communist conspiracies makes for an extremely fun read. Not as 'literary' as Roth's other work, but very funny.

I read this book for my book club, and while others in the club did not like it, I did. found parts of it funny as it took a bit of a comical look at baseball in the past. A bit about this book though. The first portion of this book has nothing to do with baseball and is frankly quite boring. You have to have some patience to get through it and onto the end of the book.

No no no no no.
This is a terrible novel. There is a sickening amount of racism and misogyny, and I understand the satirical and parodic nature of the story, but this crossed too many lines for me. The brilliant prologue could've been published as a novella; but unfortunately it precedes a novel that tries so hard to be crudely funny that Roth starts competing with himself to see how racist he can get away with being. Hard pass. Ugh.
