This is probably where the series peaks so far. Every major plot point in this book is chilling, highly emotional and absolutely terrifying. The slow realization of the truth is crazy well-written.
Swiftpaw and Bluestar will be missed, but I forgot that we never actually see their deaths from their perspective. After years and years of watching animations, you'd think that were the case.
Regardless, this was amazing. I can't wait to get to The Darkest Hour.

Listen, the characters in this book are mostly defensive, incompetent, and make stupid decisions, but this book somehow slaps anyway. Fireheart acts like an idiot and a lot of problems could probably have been avoided if the characters made better decisions, but there’s so much I love about this book that I was able to overlook it. And to give Fireheart credit, Bluestar’s
mental and emotional decline in this book
is brutal. He should never have been named deputy, he’s not ready and
Bluestar is certainly doing nothing to help him

Besides, the cats doing stupid stuff and worldbuilding and conflicts not making sense if viewed with scrutiny is a problem in every book, so it’s not unique to this one, just particularly bad. Once I decided to not take things very seriously and just have fun, the plot and Bluestar’s character scenes were gripping and so compelling! So much happens in this book, I had a blast! I also honestly teared up a little at the end. I just really enjoyed this one!

This is book number #5 in the Warriors series and I'm still enjoying reading about the adventures of Thunderclan! Overall the story continues at a good pace and has all the same hallmarks of good writing as the previous installments e.g., regular reminders about what has happened previously and good character development. This book continues with the 'darker' theme as Thunderclan work through mounting internal and external challenges, but I still think it's written appropriately for kids and I really enjoyed the storyline, I actually didn't guess the endgame!
I obviously knew about the dogs, but I had no clue how the cats were going to try and get rid of them. I think the writing was clever around this part.
. My favourite character has become Cinderpelt, Yellowfang would be proud of her!

Specifics:

  • The impacts of disability in the wild e.g. through
    Snowkit's deafness

  • Questioning the role of religion as a mechanism of control e.g., through
Cloudpaw questioning the legitimacy of Star Clan

  • Shows the moral conflict of disagreeing with or going against orders of people in authority that you believe are wrong e.g., through
Fireheart negotiating with Windclan without telling Bluestar, in order to prevent a battle she had ordered
  • Depiction of depression, grief, and trauma response, e.g, through
Bluestar predominently, but also Speckletail and Lostface (what a cruel name)

I don’t care if you hate Bluestar, I LOVE her. Her character is layered and she has a crazy sad backstory. This is definitely her book— 5 stars!!
