I barely remember the first time that I read this book because I was so irritated with the direction of the story after Wolves of the Calla. I recently read it again because I really enjoyed the first four books, and I think it's probably better than I initially thought but still not very good. It progresses the direction of story consistent with the last three books, but inconsistent with the first four. It's clear that King would have written a different (probably better) story had he not been hit by a drunk driver.

I've finally finished this one. I say thank-ya.

I still don't know if you can skip this book or not. I felt like the whole thing was mostly for Stephen King's own sake than the readers. It felt like him finally getting his head as straight as he could with the story, apologizing before-hand to the readers for all the stuff that (maybe?) won't make total sense, and achieving peace over the fact that the whole saga is ending. His masterpiece is almost over.

My favorite part was the Jake/Callahan's one. And they just have THE ONE chapter so, there is that. Eddie and Roland's are enjoyable and Susannah and Mia's... they are ok. They give you context and explain other things that are probably important to understand why the tower itself is so important.

What is completely real is that the ending of this book made me hungry for more. I'll jump straight to the last one because I want to know what's gonna happen; I feel like I deserve the adventure I was expecting in this one. And I miss Roland and his ka-tet as their best so I'm looking forward to it.

This had parts the I like much more than the previous volume, but omg Stephen King, I do not want to read about you in your own book. I just don't. The few bits where that took over the story were painfully boring to someone who's only ever read one King book outside this series. It might be a bit before I start in on the final book.

This didn’t do it for me

I was warned about this one and man, people weren't kidding. There's flashes of King's brilliance in here but it's too mixed up with some hot self-indulgent garbage. The AV Club wasn't kidding when it said that the Dark Tower series contained some of King's best writing but also some of his worst. Sigh. Ah well, one more book to finally climb the Dark Tower.

Another great book in the series which I'm loving second time round. Only one more to go but unfortunately I remember what happens at the end, oh well that's probably why I'm reading it all over again.

Oh man where do I begin….

I was soooo nervous to even read this book because of the book reviews. So many mixed reviews, and that’s where I start to question did I read the same book as the people who hated it ? Because let me tell you I absolutely loved and devoured this book. Couldn’t even put it down on some occasions. I only have one more book before my dark tower journey ends and I’m not ready. But I’m excited to read more about Roland,Callahan,Eddie, OY and to finally read about Susannah’s outcome even if it’s only for one more time. I’m ready for all the answers and what lies inside this dark tower.

The self insertion of the author was a bit much. Although I like how everything is culminating toward the Tower and raced through the book because it was so good, placing himself or a facsimile of himself was unnecessary. It blurred fiction and fantasy too much and made me wonder whether Stephen King did it to amuse himself or because he truly felt it necessary. He wanted to call himself a god, I suppose. I feel like it could have done otherwise.

Jake and Callahan mostly got shorthanded in this book, which isn't surprising since they were chasing after Susannah. Speaking of which, the idea of her baby being Roland's child is slightly beyond belief, but I suppose for the sake of the story, we'll just bite our tongue and not object too much. After all, stranger things have happened in fiction.

I enjoyed the way Susannah wielded the mental power and Mia's development. Mia felt like a fully fleshed out, ultimately betrayed character, though, like Susannah, I didn't feel sorry for her. What will become of the chap, I wonder? And what will happen to Susannah-Mio, divided girl of mine?

Will Roland be able to reach the Dark Tower before the Beams are broken? Will they break? What will become of his bastard son? There's only one story left...and I'll be back to the Dark Tower series soon enough.

Say thankee-sai. Long days and pleasant nights.

(But boy, the self insertion was cheesy...)

Sooooo good, the last page gave me goosebumps.
