Yeah, this one definitely wasn’t for me. It took me 6 months to finish and I only really loved one of the stories. I’m left more than disappointed because a couple of years ago this was everyone’s favorite anthology and I just don’t get it.

This is a fantastic collection of stories for the holidays. They were mostly light and fun, and just perfect to get you in a festive mood.

Despite Laini Taylor being one of my favorite authors, I didn't really love her story in this collection. It just didn't really fit with the others. The other one I didn't really care for was the story by David Levithan. Too much navel gazing for my tastes, and I'm not tempted to pick up any of his books.

The rest of the stories were great, I just wish I had given myself more time before the holidays were over to read them.

Favorite Quote Of The Book - “'I will free you, and I will lift you. I will learn a thousand ways to make you laugh. Your smiles will be the honey in my mead, your enchantment my delight.'” ("The Girl Who Woke The Dreamer" by Laini Taylor)

This book is an assortment of twelve holiday stories written by well-known young adult novelists. Below I have included a list of the stories:

"Midnights" - Rainbow Rowell (5 stars)
"The Lady and the Fox" - Kelly Link (did not read)
"Angels in the Snow" - Matt De La Pena (did not read)
"Polaris is Where You'll Find Me" - Jenny Han (4 stars)
"It's a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown" - Stephanie Perkins (5 stars)
"Your Temporary Santa" - David Levithan (5 stars)
"Krampuslauf" - Holly Black (did not read)
"What the Hell Have You Done, Sophie Roth?" - Gayle Forman (did not read)
"Beer Buckets and Baby Jesus" - Myra McEntire (did not read)
"Welcome to Christmas, CA" - Kiersten White (did not read)
"Star of Bethlehem" - Ally Carter (5 stars)
"The Girl Who Woke The Dreamer" - Laini Taylor (5 stars)

I'm going to have a hard time reviewing this work, considering it is an amalgam of assorted stories. As you can see, there were quite a few I did not read. I tried reading all of them; but, for those I did not finish reading, I only read about a couple pages and realized that they were not for me. Whether it was the subject matter or the author's tone, something just did not sit right with me and I continued to the next one until I reached one that sang to me. If you add up all the scores I assigned each story, assigning 1 star to those I could not read, and divide by the number of stories to get the average, you actually get a score of 2.9 rounded up to 3. But, since some of those 5-star stories were SO good, I actually rounded my overall score up to 4.

If I had to pick a favorite, I would choose "Star of Bethlehem." It is a really cute story about this girl, Liddy, who is at an airport over the holidays and is on her way to New York. When she overhears another girl about her age from Iceland begging to be let on the plane to New York, even though she has the wrong ticket, Liddy trades tickets with her, so that the girl from Iceland, Hulda, can go to New York. We find out later that Liddy was trying to escape her life in New York, so she was happy to go to Oklahoma in Hulda's place. She actually ends up impersonating Hulda until she is found out. And, of course, she finds love with a nice country boy along the way.

Every one of the stories I read included love as one of the main themes, which I guess makes sense, considering the title of the book. I would recommend this book, especially if you love reading about love and acceptance and the holiday spirit.

I read this compilation for the #TwelveGoldenReads read along in December 2014. Below is a rating and small description of my thoughts on each individual story.

"Midnights by Rainbow Rowell - 4/5 stars"

"The Lady and the Fox by Kelly Link - 4 out of 5 stars! First time i've heard of this author and first time reading from her. Really enjoyed the details and writing style, but the story was a bit confusing and there are a lot of unanswered questions"

"Angels in the Snow by Matt de la Peña - 4 out of 5 stars! I feel so connected to this story, because of the representation of Latinos and my hometown of San Diego. I empathize with the main character since I too know not having anything to eat. I think this was a very cute story and I loved the sort of relationship that evolves. I'll definitely be checking out the author."

"Polaris Is Where You'll Find Me by Jenny Han - 5/5! Why did it end there?! This story is so cute! Such a great premise, never would've thought of it! Loved how much detail we got from so little and I loved all the different dynamics"

"It's a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown by Stephanie Perkins - 5/5! This story was so cute! Definitely my favorite so far. I love the quirkiness of the characters and how we still got deep pasts in a short amount of pages"

"Your Temporary Santa by David Leviathan - 4/5! This was a cute story, though there was definitely information that was not shared which had me a bit confused. I am glad that there was LGBT representation in this compilation. Loved the little kid wonder and Christmas Magic :D"

"Krampuslauf by Holly Black - 2/5. Did not like this. Very confusing and unrealistic throughout. Didn't understand the mythology and it was not explained. Not my cup of tea"

"What the Hell Have You Done, Sophie Roth? by Gayle Forman - 5/5! Loved this story! So much diversity, so many details all packed into a few pages. Really enjoyed the quirkiness in conversations and the interactions between the main characters."

"Beer Buckets and Baby Jesus by Myra McEntire - 5/5! I loved this story! Really enjoyed the humor and the banter between the main characters. The plot in itself was hilarious! Will definitely be checking out this author"

"Welcome to Christmas, CA by Kirsten White - 5/5!! Loved this story! So heartwarming and cute. Loved the Latin and California elements, reminded me of home. Absolutely loved the message and writing style as well"

"Star of Bethlehem by Ally Carter - 4/5! Ally Carter is one of my favorite authors and I loved this story! It was cute, heartwarming with a little mystery and some real situations. Loved the main characters and the supporting characters had just as much to say and it was lovely!"

"The Girl Who Woke the Dreamer by Laini Taylor - 4/5! Loved the writing, thought it was beautiful. Really interesting plot and world but the beginning was a bit heavy for the last story. Absolutely loved the ending though!"

This was such a fun book to read over the winter/holiday season! I definitely had my favorite stories, and I liked some much more than others. I thought the idea of a collection of short stories was enjoyable because I could read a few stories at a time. My favorite story, I think, was the very first one by Rainbow Rowell! I haven't read anything else by her, but I absolutely loved it! I actually wanted that story to be longer! I also enjoyed a couple other ones because of the characters and plot. But, I ultimately gave this book a 3.5/5 because some of the stories I really didn't care for; I either really liked the story or really didn't care for it, no real in between.

I really enjoyed some stories and didn't enjoy others. I should have kept better track of which were my favorites. But I think I liked Laini Taylor's story the most.
