I just couldn't get into it. The writing was very repetitive and the constant use of dictionary definitions kinda took all the air out of it for me. I liked what she had so say, just not the way she put it into words. DNF.

Interesting themes and challenging context about race, identity and our relationship with nature. However the writing is a little clunky and cliche in places and it feels like thoughts aren’t fully developed

I wanted to read this as I agree very much with the premise of the book and the authors perspective and politics but ultimately I was disappointed with the prose which rarely left “Guardian Long Read” territory. There’s too much reliance on dictionary definitions to start chapters and thoughts, a lot of tortured metaphors, and a lot of repetitiveness. It also meanders from politics to memoir to nature writing with not enough time spent on any particular one for it to be meaningful - the best moments were in the nature writing vein and I wish the author had trusted herself enough to focus there more.
