So I am not into crime books but I got this one for free so I thought I might as well try it.

The protagonist was definitely written off the author himself. Which was a problem. It's character-driven book and I find it a bit tricky to emphasize with the character who when someone threatens his familly be like: "Okay. What's next?" Like he doesn't even react. And his wife is taking care of the house and daughter and working while her husband can't even go to the shop to buy food. What a good hudband! (Sarcasm)

Paul is witty I can give him that. And knows how to kick ass of his collegues (sometimes literally). The vast majority of the book is lawyers yelling at each other. 🤣 And Martini writing makes it so hilarious. Also how they kick their opponent's ass without breaking any laws. 🤣

It has lots of details about US law system. I honestly stopped googling it all somewhere near the second chapter.

The book is very cheerful. There are some dark moments in the ending but overall it's intertaining. The ending is good. I was like "how couldn't I see it coming? It seems so obvious now".

Prime Witness is The Lincoln Lawyer without all the excellent writing. The story sounds so much like the Michael Connelly novel and one almost expects the main character to be named Mickey. It is still a fairly good read.

I first got interested in Steve Martini after watching The Judge, an interesting movie that had some nice courtroom scenes for which I am always a sucker. I had already purchased Prime Witness in audio so decided to make it my chores listening. I enjoyed it. Several characters pop up who were in The Judge. This one is unusual int hat Paul Modriani, Martini's protagonist plays the role of district attorney, rather against his will and he is thrown into the middle of a case that pits him against an old antagonist. No point repeating the plot, that's available everywhere.

Some reviewers have downgraded this book because of the level of detail supplied in the investigation. That's the kind of stuff I like. I especially enjoyed the courtroom and lawyerly battles using obscure features of the law in an attempt to gain the upper hand in the battle to gain the advantage.

One negative, I thought, was the side plot that involved threats against Modriani's wife. I thought that was unnecessary and not well explicated. The ending is perhaps a bit preposterous; nevertheless, solid entertainment.
