generally enjoyed it. would absolutely recommend this over annie bot, which i felt tried (and failed) to evaluate similar themes of womanhood and autonomy; the echo wife did a far better, nuanced job of exploring these themes. the main character is deeply flawed and unlikable, but her motivations are well-developed which makes her engaging.

didn't adore this, but still an enjoyable read. do feel like something is missing, but that just might be me splitting hairs.

This book is an excellent domestic thriller with a sci-fi twist. The protagonist is fully flawed and three dimensional. Just on the cusp of unlikable while still completely sympathetic. Great reflection on the roles women are expected to play in men’s lives.

Falls apart on asking any logistical questions. That shouldn’t be a problem bc the book is about themes of identity & grooming & abuse. The cloning science bits are only there to enable the author to explore the themes in the ways she’s chosen. But the protagonist is an obsessive scientist, so quite a lot of the book is describing & justifying hand-wavy science that just distracts from the actual points: how are Martine, Evelyn, and Evelyn’s mom actually different? How are Nathan, Evelyn, and Evelyn’s dad actually different? The book needed tighter editing to be effective.
