Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but make it pretentious and boring. Chriiiiiiist, this is so slow. Could have easily been told as -- or really, more -- effectively in half the space. Instead, it goes on forever and yet still ends abruptly, without, really, the courage to vanquish any foes or resolve the plot. And I don't think the worldbuilding holds up. I don't believe in this version of humanity without or with so very little reading for the conveyance of information or storytelling or whatever; I don't believe there aren't more books-that-aren't-books (people's memories). Everything -- memory, identity, shitty dads -- is explored, lengthily, but only on a surface level, and ultimately this novel neither enlightened nor moved me. It's... sorry to be so obvious here... forgettable.

so much SAD.......................
this book felt very fairytaleish for the first part,
i actually really loved the descriptions of the bindery with seredith and watching emmett progress in his craft.
it almost reminded me a bit of howl's moving castle. and then it was just pure PAIN and SUFFERING for our characters.
the writing voice was a bit simplistic but that could have been purposeful to enhance the whimsical fairytale vibes. there was a lot of "i felt this. and i suddenly felt this. then i did this." either way it didn't detract too much. the leads were also not amazingly fleshed out in my opinion.
emmett being a binder but in the whole course of this story he only bound One singular person?? and kind of by accident???? lucian's character development in the flashback scenes was so welcome, so for it to all go away for an entire third of the book was... i understand that it was important for the plot, but it was a shame.

the plot itself and the overall concept was super interesting and what kept me going. the romance plot had its issues (justice for alta!!!!!!) but it definitely raised the stakes and their connection felt precious. the descriptions of binding and its effects as well as the whole worldview surrounding books were so interesting... i think those scenes were some of the strongest. i was never bored reading this one!
