Wow, a lot going on here. A bit repetitive and mighty superstitious, ancient times are presented here in a not-too-graphic presentation. My first Alice Hoffman, but I have some more of hers to read on my list. This book has been on my TBR since 2012, so I am happy to report finishing, and well worth it.
Herbane, holy plant.
Burned amulets at roots offering to Ashtoresh, goddess watch in time of strife.
Recipe book for human heart, all we know and all experienced contained there.

It took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I enjoyed the character development and the relationships and histories of each woman. Not something I would usually read but glad that I did.

This was a phenomenal book. Loved the strong female characters. Alice Hoffman at her best! I am going to try to find the movie on Netflix.

I started this book after finishing A Song of Ice and Fire. I was excited to get back to things that I love - history and character-driven storytelling.
The book is told from the points of view of four different women. However, the stories intertwine so elegantly, that the overall plot becomes more cohesive with each additional character. In the end, you feel that you've read one fascinating story, not a series of fragments. Also, each narrator has their own voice. All of their perspectives are deep and fascinating - there are no weak links.
In the end, I loved the book because history very rarely tells women's stories, especially the stories of "everyday" women from ancient times. This book gives them life - aspirations, regrets, pain, and the strength to persevere. It explores the idea that strength comes in different forms, and the love means something different to each of us. the characters are relatable even though the story is set 2000 years ago.

Although sometimes slow in spots, I really enjoyed this book. I seldom read books set in eras long past, and found the history of this book so interesting. A sign of a good book, to me, is thinking about the characters throughout your day, and even after you finish. I loved the strong women in this book.
