This book was pretty good. It talks about the FLDS, or the mormons who never gave up polygamy. It's told from the viewpoint of a "lost boy" or a boy who left the church. After years of sexual abuse at the hands of the prophet, Brent Jeffs grows up, leaves the church, and then sues the prophet of the church for what he has done to him. I had heard some of this story growing up, but it was interesting to hear it from the perspective of an insider to the whole thing. I'm only giving this 4 stars as opposed to 5 because there were several points in the narrative where I thought "who the hell cares?" and started skimming over whole chapters. There was enough of interest for me to say I liked this book, but not enough for me to say I loved this book. Still, I'm glad I read it, especially since it only took 3 months to get through.

So I do really feel for this writer and the other "lost boys", however, the voice was rather defensive and vindictive. I would have enjoyed reading it more if he hadn't pointed fingers at the Mormon church, his dad's other wives, his half-siblings, etc. It seemed like he was trying to clear the family name by saying they basically had no agency in their decisions. Horrible circumstances, but poor writing.

This book was written by Brent Jeffs, the nephew of FLDS cult leader Warren Jeffs. Brent outlines his life and family connections in this, the church doctrine, and the horrific abuse the he suffered at the hands of Warren Jeffs. So many boys have suffered physical, emotional, and sexual abuse from prominent members of the church, especially Warren Jeffs. It was revolting to read about how people in general are treated, but especially kids. I feel that Brent was extremely brave for leaving and going public with his story. I hope that many others have the courage to do the same.
