In this sequel to Crookhaven: The School for Thieves, Gabriel and his crew are now in their second year at Crookhaven. In addition to the continuation of the previously introduced classes, the students now also have an interesting new subject: Reclamation. For which Gabriel and the Brothers Crim have to overcome their aversion to swimming. And then there's this year's seemingly impossible Break-in challenge and the friends' discovery of Marvel's Maze, the forgotten labyrinth of obstacles that no one has yet been able to complete. And all this is complicated by the fact that Penelope has been forbidden by her father from interacting with Gabriel, Ade and Ede.

This second book in the series was every bit as enjoyable as the first one. Fast moving and gripping, with some interesting new characters added to the mix as well as revelations about characters from the first book, the story was elaborate and multifaceted enough without being too complicated. Some of my favourite parts of the book included the descriptions of the different obstacles in the maze, details of the classes and, of course, the Break-in. And as before, the Brothers Crim didn't fail to entertain with their antics and inventions!

As I've said about the first book, this is one of those middle-grade books that will appeal as much to adults as to its target age range. I can't wait for book three!

This captivating sequel seamlessly continues the story from the first book, introducing new challenges and mysteries that keep you hooked.

While character development takes a back seat, the touching portrayal of friendship and teamwork compensates. Despite some characters being left unexplored, the desire for a broader perspective, especially on the intriguing villains, becomes apparent. Therefore all the unanswered questions add anticipation for the next installment, creating an eagerness that lingers.

The mystery, tailored for a younger audience, unfolds with a predictable charm. Even if the reader can unravel its secrets, the journey remains enjoyable. A minor flaw overshadowed by the overall quality of the story.

The witty, easy-to-read writing style enhances the experience. The only real big downside? The story ends too soon, leaving you craving more. An overall excellent read that promises a return visit.
