There is nothing I can add about a book that’s ancient except that Io made me so sad I got a tummy ache
I read this for a mythology class I took in college and absolutely adored it. For anyone who loves Ancient Greece, this is a real treat because it starts you at the very beginning.
As a child I used to borrow books from the public library on Classical mythology that were aimed at children, and was always fascinated by these tales. It was thrilling, when, as an adult I discovered and was able to embrace this, the source.

It is a lovely anthology that really teaches you a lot, but is one that is best consumed slowly.
Stunned by the flow Ovid establishes early and carries over an almost unimaginable scope. Works both in pieces and as a whole. I’m sure it’s something entirely different to read it in its original Latin (some argue it can only be appreciated in this way) but it’s simply something I can’t do in my lifetime so I give tremendous credit to David Raeburn for this beautiful flowing translation.
My book is marked with too many underlines and brackets and highlights to post here. This is one I’ll return to like the Iliad (which comes to the forefront in my favorite book, book 13).
Ovid’s obvious gusto is backed by his genius as he challenges the masters, the gods, tradition, and the very form of why poetry could be.

Refraining from rating until I read another translation. However it may take several years if not decades to come back to this collection. While the stories are interesting and foundational for the classics, the translation has no musicality, rather prosaic.
