Okumaya niyetlendiğiniz/okuduğunuz bu eser, sıradan bi kitap değil. Bu yüzden öncelikle okumayı düşünenler için bir girizgah yapacağım:
Ben alanımla ilgili olduğu için sıkıntı yaşamadım ama eseri okumaya niyetlenen herkes aynı seviyede mitoloji bilgisine sahip olmadığı için eserde "kimin kim olduğuna" dair bir soy ağacı ya da katalog ciddi bir ihtiyaç diye düşünüyorum. Yine dipnotlarda bazı terimlerin Türkçe karşılığı olsaydı Yunan/Roma mitolojisine hakim olmayanlar daha rahat okumalar yapardı. Bunların olmaması bir eksiklik mi değil mi tartışılır fakat her halükarda hakkını vererek ilerlemek isterseniz mutlaka bir mitolojji sözlüğüne bakarak ya da internet araması yaparak ilerlemenizi öneririm. Bir başka yayınevinden çıkan çeviride yukarıda bahsettiğim hususlar mevcut. Bu yüzden verdiğim puan kesinlikle çeviriye/yayınevine değil... Eserin büyüklüğüne.
Ilias gibi Metamorphoses 'de heksametron üslübu ile yazılmış ve bir kere başladığınızda "karakterler" kafanızda yerleştikçe akıcılık sizi esir alacak dedikten sonra içeriğe dair düşüncelerimi yazmaya devam edeyim...
Adından da anlaşılacağı üzere kaos'tan düzene dönüşümü anlatan bu kitap mitolojinin Roma bakış açısıyla kaleme alınmış içeriği diye hatırlatmakta fayda var, çevirmen önsözünde de kadın/erkek ilişkilerine dair bazı söylemlere dair çekincemelerim(!) mevcut.
Ovidius, sürgün haberini aldığında Metamorphoses ile birlikte diğer el yazmalarını da yaktığından elimize ulaşan nüshalar dostlarındaki kopyalardan bize ulaşanlar aracılığıyla gördüklerimiz. Yayınlamadan önce son dokunuşlar yapma imkanı olsaydı neler okurduk kimbilir. (müellif burada hayıflanıyor)

I read the translation by Allen Mandelbaum and really liked it. Loved the descriptions of nature and the way he translated the metaphors.

Ovid’s Metamorphoses has been on my tbr for a couple of years and I finally settled down and lost myself to the vast beauty of the tale and writing that has beneath translated by David Raeburn and provides commentary at the beginning of each book before the verse continues.
Bringing together Greek and Roman mythology and legends such as Perseus, Daedalus and Hercules with characters and creatures such as Cyclopes, Centaurs, Circe, Apollo and other names that have become legendary (excuse the pun) throughout time and across religious and spiritual beliefs.
Whilst the poem (and the stories this has come from) does feature some dark topics such as familial incest, murder, cannibalism, and incidents of SA that can make the reader uncomfortable? They are not graphic, and I found myself repeating to myself that Ovid did write this around 8 CE. Alongside the darker subject matters, there are some wonderful humorous moments and tales of how the Gods would gain revenge or manipulate things to get their own way. All these amazing characters from mythology have moments of being toddlers, and whilst reading Ovid’s beautiful writing; I do giggle at times.
If you are a lover of Grecian and Roman mythology (which do crossover in their storytelling), the Metamorphoses is one that must be read. Raeburn adds so much to the book, helping to guide you along the 15 ‘books’ of the poem, and also provides a fascinating insight into Ovid himself.
I find myself once again in awe that there's a love for these tales for so many centuries and evolutions of humanity and its society.

A compendium of many of the great myths I first heard as a teenager, it was great fun to go in and read stories I feel like I’ve known for so much of my life but have never read primary tellings of (just modern, children’s versions, or retellings through opera). Many of the stories are iconic and timeless, like Orpheus and Eurydice, Daedalus and Icarus, Arachne, Medusa, and others. There are over 250 stories contained, starting with a mystical creation of the world, then later passing by the events of the Iliad and the Odyssey (Homer, who lived 800 years before Ovid, feels ancient even in this 2000 year old text), all the way through the assassination of Caesar. Towards the end, you even get Pythagoras detailing the main theme of the novel (human life, nature, and the world are constantly transforming each and every moment, along with a strong argument for being a vegetarian).
Many of the stories are shockingly graphic, with details of entrails being wrapped around spokes, blood seeping into the ground, etc. There are plenty of gods committing terrible acts towards helpless women, like sexual abuse and rape, but always with an extremely sympathetic moment of pity for the female characters. Each story dovetails into the next, and while Ovid takes several strange tangents along the way, it is more or less seamless. Perhaps that is the most amazing thing of all, but the thing that was hardest for me to reconcile, was that while this is a ‘greatest hits’ of mythology, the fact that many of the stories wrap up with a similar theme (change and transformation) as a way to bring in the next story, creates a feeling of repetition that is at ends with its long form narrative.
This translation is 5 out of 5, the language and poetry is crisp and clear, everything is set in a bouncing iambic pentameter, and rhyming is not forced, but used to highlight the most emotional moments. It only begins to feel archaic when the list of locations traveled or a family tree is told, but the narratives themselves read so easily. My only complaint about this specific edition is I really wish there was an index of stories in the back; the table of contents lists Books 1 through 15, but it is only when you go to the start of a Book do you see the individual myths that are contained. I wish I could find my favorites easily, as I think the biggest strength of this book for now is going back in and reliving my favorite moments.
If you like mythology and aren’t intimidated by reading such a long, repetitive narrative, I would recommend this translation. If you just want to dive into your favorite stories and enjoy the trove of treasures that are sprinkled throughout the book, then this edition is highly recommended.
