read in school. Nuf said.

Maybe I am a geek... Maybe just very odd... But my last year of Latin courses at high school were just so much fun. Because our exams were about Ovid and mainly the Metamorphoses! So we were allowed to read and translate it piece by piece every single day. Of course we didn't translate it completely, so I read the remaining during this year and it was amazing!

4,5. Enige nadeel was het ontbreken van een pinguïn-metamorfose, ondanks de vele vogel-metamorfoses die Ovidius liet plaatsvinden. Als je graag leest over pinguïns, raad ik dit boek niet aan

Not sure if I'll finish this, but this is a great mythological reference book. Reminds you who Narcissus was and why Niobe cries so much.

this is a book that i know i will re-read. i especially liked the whimsical section on pythagoras.

Well that took me forever to read, mainly because the deeper into it I got, the more depressing and distressing the text became. I suppose that makes sense - Ovid is taking us from a time of gods to a time of men, and his core dynamic is about unrequited desire driving men and women (and gods) to disfigurement and dispersal. I'm glad I read it. Mandelbaum's translation, like all his other classic translations, is terrific. The early cosmology sections were my favorite. Some of those images are never going to leave me. Ovid somehow out-gores Virgil. I like the Christian story better.

Allen Mandelbaum's translation has been my favorite translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses.

June 2023: I hate Goodread's insistence to group all translations into one entry. Stephanie McCarter's translation is a no-nonsense one that refuses to romanticize the text as many past male translators have. I enjoyed her insights and translation, but the non-stop titles/new chapters really broke the flow of the epic poem.
