would you look at that! it is another case of "books i had to read really fast for class that i should definitely take the time to reread in more depth!" i did not have high hopes for this because i didn't remember loving ovid in high school, but (maybe because of the translation?) this was much better than i'd recalled so i'll probably come back to it (and like... if not all of it, definitely the medea bits)

I need to read this book again sometime, without the stress of needing to read the whole thing in a week for class. It's just great. Mythology is one of my favorite things, yet I always forget about it.

Really really excellent work of all of your standard Greek/Roman mythology. One of my better summer reading assignments.

I think this will always be my favorite ancient literary work ... enjoyed taking my time with it (over an embarrassingly long 6 months).

The terror of change against the improbable hope for personal exemption.

"A universe where nothing stays the same, sea, sky, wind, earth, and time forever changing -
Time like a river in its ceaseless motion;
On, on, each speeding hour cannot stand still,
But as waves, thrust by waves, drive waves before them,
So time runs first or follows forever new:
The flying moment is gone, what once seemed never is now, which vanishes before we say it,
Each disappearing moment in a cycle,
Each loss replaced within the living hour."

I read the translation by Allen Mandelbaum. I would just like to include a passage I found quite moving: "...and Priapus, he whose scythes and penis are a sight that terrifies all thieves."

Revisiting this book for the first time since undergrad—it confirms that the only thing that scares me more than change is eternal permanence

I actually adored this. The stories of Narcissus, Icarus, Arachne, and so many others are the stories people always hear about, but seeing the actual telling of it was a whole different experience!

Dizzying but quite enjoyable
Stories within stories within stories
Didn’t love the translation and format of this copy of the book though.

Not going to leave a rating on this one... I read it but I can't say it held my attention span. Have to say though that probably says more about me than the text!

the way this took me 2 months to read 👁️👁️ was sort of an eye opener and like it was just Greek mythology (obviously) but in more detail and damn umm it’s soooooo like dark?? The sexual assault and stuff? Rlly puts all these fav myths into perspective.
And it loses a star becuz I absolutely hate the way the sentences are written and I mean the format bc that literally showed down my pace bc wtf y does it look like that
