A complex series of nested and interlocking stories that frequently includes deconstructions of familiar (at the time) tales and is sprinkled with entertaining doses of intentionally hilarious hyperviolence, this classic is really quite modern. Or, rather, shows how classic some of these modern things truly are.
The way that Ovid tries to weave the various myths into a central narrative is fascinating. And the language of the text is absolutely beautiful in the A.D. Melville's translation. I enjoyed this work of classic literature a lot. I will say, though, that I had forgotten just how morally depraved Greek gods and men were in their sexual acts.
