I'll admit, The No-Show was not what I expected!

Like thousands of other Beth O'Leary fans, I waited not-so patiently for her latest book and dove straight into The No-Show as soon as it was released. From the promo/blurb/cover etc, I was expecting something more along the lines of a feminist-revenge type story. Three women get stood up, they figure out it's the same guy, and they're gonna FIND HIM. That kind of thing.

After finishing the book, I'm now glad it took an entirely different angle. But it wasn't really until I was about 60% of the way through the book that I became invested in these characters and what happened to them, especially Joseph.

For me, this was Beth's slowest paced book yet. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I did need the reassurance of fellow bookstagrammers that this book did indeed pick up! Around 60/70% of the way through, it all clicked. And it was very satisfying to understand where this book was heading. I'm usually very good for spotting/guessing plot twists, but I didn't really grasp this one until nearer the end.

In many ways, The No-Show felt a little smarter (from a plot device perspective) than here other books. The way she managed the many moving puzzle pieces across the book felt intuitive to me, which is why I couldn't give it any less than 4 stars. The characters did at times feel a little tough to empathise with, but again I think this was potentially another plot device to ensure the ending felt surprising.

Perhaps not my favourite O'Leary book, but a great read nonetheless. I didn't quite see how I'd find this a 'tearjerker' like others were suggesting when I first started this book, however after finishing I can now confirm: tears were shed.

Favourite character: Jane, 100%
Least favourite character: Scott, you're a bit useless let's face it
Final thoughts: Surprisingly emotional and profound in ways that only Beth O'Leary could manage to surprise us with

(Listened to The No-Show on Audible)
