I found the writing extremely cringey and juvenile, as well as  just not very well written, and I didnā€™t connect with any of the characters

This is the first in a new series, and while it wasnā€™t my *favorite* of Robertā€™s work, I will likely continue the series. Itā€™s probably my bisexual bias (Brittany the Biased Bisexual should be my new username hahahaha), but I thought Evelyn was a funny, badass, chaotic character. She is framed as a bit ā€œunlikeable,ā€ but I ride hard for her idgaf šŸ˜‚  I think the language may feel anachronistic to others, but idk if this is meant to be contemporary or historical fantasy, so just suspend your disbelief & try to have fun with this one! Bowen, on the other hand, while so very sweet, needed to be fleshed out a bit more! Overall, it was fun enough, but sometimes the pacing felt off, or the narrative fell flat in telling too much.

what to expect:
- supernatural/paranormal romance filled with pirates, vampires, witches & more!
- insta-love (look, itā€™s not my favorite either, but it was enjoyable enough)
- queer rep: pan/bisexual leads, lesbian ex, side characters that use they/them, xe/xir, ne/nim pronouns
- golden retriever love interest
- familiar, run-of-the-mill world building (portals to different realms!)

steam rating: I actually would have liked *more* just from what Iā€™ve read from Robert before! anyway, I give this one 3/5
