Overall,
I have been getting away from young adult fantasy as I age, I have a more and more difficult time connecting to the characters. However I kept hearing how good this trilogy was so I figured I would give it a go. While not the freshest of story ideas, it is a compelling story that I was quickly engrossed in. There was enough foreshadowing that I wasnt surprised by most of the reveals, except that one at the end. I did not see that one coming. I will definately be continuing this series.

Recommendation,
A YA Fantasy (on the dark themed side of things) that I would say is at the older end of the spectrum for some of the darker themed elements (i.e. graphic torture) check some trigger warnings before starting. So far I am impressed and am enjoying this series.

A dark ya fantasy that caught me off guard with the twist at the end.

I was truly hooked in, though my interest did start to wane in the second half and the middle seemed to drag on for a little too long leaving the end feeling a little whiplash-y (though not enough to feel overly rushed).

I had guessed that Kiva was related to the rebel queen somehow but had assumed it would be a distant bloodline that she was unaware herself

The ending took me a little by surprise with the big reveal, though we’d gotten hints throughout.

While the romance subplot is definitely ya fitting the darker themes in the book are one to check out before reading

Overall an excellent read and I’m intrigued to read the next.

This is an amazing book. The setting felt unique and darker than I was expecting for a YA book, but I was here for the atmosphere.

I loved the characters and how they dealt with the mystery and challenges that they find themselves in.
By time I got to the end of the book I was so happy that I already had the sequel. The ending left my mouth agape and me reaching immediately for the sequel.

I really loved the book but the ending made no sense to me.
like, if Kiva knew that her mother was the rebel queen then everything that happend makes no sense at all. and if she didn't know then why was she suddenly so certain in the end. it also kind of invalidates the whole thing about kiva's dad being arrested for nothing basically.
i hope that the next book clears some of that up at least. but i did like the character dynamics and all in all the story was really good.
