"It is not the custom in our country to press a suit upon a lady by poking people off a horse."

Fun little story (about 100 pages in large font) about a modern American man (from 1882) landing on an island where people still behave like middle-age England, with castles and jousting, etc. The American introduces them to telephones, steam ships, and cigars, and has interesting adventures. Pretty funny. Similar to the longer, better known "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court". The author claimed Mark Twain plagiarized the idea. They fought bitterly over it, but did not resort to jousting.

"We shall most likely have quite a collection of rescued damsels on our hands by the time we get back home. It is interesting, but embarrassing."

It is worth a read if you like humorous stories of knights in shining armor.
