the book is the 7th in the series and starts off with the boudelairs in mr poe's office reading the newspaper where they find the newspaper has printed olaf's name wrongly.they get sent to a village which is known as vfd,which they chose,thinking it has got to do with the vfd that the quagmires told them about.

the elders have so many weird rules and a long list of them.and the town is full of crows.the villagers treat them badly from the very moment they came in and dont do any of the chores themselves.but as usual count olaf strikes again.
