The main character is boring and annoyingly pessimistic. The plot also goes nowhere. The only fun part was analyzing the book for English class.

Do you see me?
_____

I am not too sure you will come across many fantastic books that make you feel like shit.

I feel very sorry for Holden Caufield. It feels as though no one has ever really listens to him, or sees him. Even if you did listen to him, he would be spinning a yarn, as us Aussies like to say.

Characters like Holden make me wonder about all those who have never really been seen. People who are full of life, experiences, wonders and dreams, but who have had the misfortune of feeling as though they are not worth listening to, or no one would bother to care listening anyway.

Pulling from my personal experiences, one of the most jarring experiences I had this year was a conversation with a friend. We were speaking on the phone about a personal project we both had a shared interest in. As our excitement about the topic picked up, so did our concentration on each other's words, recounting what we were saying to each other exactly as intended. It was so simple, and yet, I had never heard my words understood with such clarity before. Such is the experience I wished for Holden during the book. A moment where a close friend, family member, or even a stranger, to truly understand what he was feeling.

Have you truly listened to someone before?

This book was real crazy. It really was.
No but seriously, this book was enjoyable and I think really relatable for people in high school going through mental health issues. The ending was okay. I both liked how open it was and hated how much it left out. I enjoyed the writing style, it was different from what I'm used to and honestly, it was a nice break, especially because I'm just getting out of a reading block, so it was nice to change things up.
