The author’s phenomenal prose and world-building allow all of these elements to come together to make a fascinating tale that is both heart-breaking and yet still hopeful and heart-warming. The book is about healing, connection, joy and acceptance. There are definitely some parts that are quite brutal, dealing with Katrina’s experiences with abuse and transphobia (check trigger warnings) which I was not expecting but were integral to Katrina's story.

Not a bad book, but hard to recommend. I feel like this book has too many things going on. They all make sense by the end, but I think it's doing too much. I guess I don't like the combination of the fantasy and scifi elements without going too in depth about the fantasy elements.
