Book Review - Isaac Bell #4 The Race by Clive Cussler
Another book in the Isaac Bell series, this was the 6th book I finished in 2020.
This could be Isaac Bell's most dangerous case yet.
Air travel is still in its infancy. Aircraft are a new concept. Yet one man is sponsoring a race from one side of the united states to another in 50 days or less by aircraft.
One of the pilots is being targeted by her husband and put under Isaac Bell's protection. Her husband is on the run across the country.
Sabotage and murder run amok as other competitors are put under threat during the race.
Who will win ?
This is another great story in this set. I am looking forward to finishing the entire set.

An airplane race across the US with a female pilot as one of the favorites to win. However, her jealous husband is out to sabotage the race, so Isaac Bell and his team of detectives must figure out how to stop him.

This Isaac bell book was pretty damn good. Never knew I liked airplanes that much but Clive cussler proved me wrong.

What the author(s) do with this series: Clive Cussler and Justin Scott know how to write a book. This is part of the series called the Isaac Bell Adventures. This paragraph applies to all books in this series. Isaac is an investigator for a private firm who’s motto is that the always get their man The books are set in the early 1900’s and are based on the author’s fascination with the leading technologies of the time – things like fast (by their standards) trains, automobiles and ships. New technologies are introduced like aeroplanes and talking pictures. Depending on the book, many of the social issues of the day are woven into the story such as strikes and strike breakers, gangs running businesses, stock speculators and manipulators as well as later in the series the storm clouds of what will become World War I. The author is skilled at bringing in the details of how society works in that era, such as how beef makes it to NYC, or how different strata of society operate in SFO
Do you need to read this series in order: Probably not, but I think you will miss out on the character development of the protagonist and his lady friend.
Triggers: there is an ample supply of violence, people die, from violence (fires, gun shots, bombs, crashes, knives, beatings, accidents). Some of the violence is directed at kids. In this story there is domestic violence – spousal abuse.
One would think that all that detail would make it a slow read, but that is not the case. The pages fly by, our erstwhile detective, Isaac Bell, is “on the jump” all the time. It’s a super-fast story line, there is one crisis after another, one more bad guy to conquer and one more good guy to save. This isn’t a bad thing at all, but sometimes as the reader you have to take a breath.
The race is about an airplane race across the country. In the background, the author describes all these towns and places and it’s nice to see the contrast with the developed cities with the rural areas. The story is chock full of bad guys wanting to sabotage the flying machines, a love story of sorts and spurned lovers.

I really enjoy the Issac Bell series. It is set in the early 1900's and provides a little history with adventure.
This book revolves around a airplane race from NY to San Francisco. The race is headlined by a beautiful woman who has a psychotic husband who is trying to kill her. The Van Dorn detective agency is hired to protect her. Issac plunges headlong into the mystery, learning to fly along the way. It is a fun story that is not real heavy reading - just a good read.

Great series. I am enjoying this series set at the beginning of the 20th Century. The book plot blends new for the time technology, a bit of history, suspense, some romance, all in a "Rip Roaring" storyline. Recommended

Probably my last fake Clive Cussler book, where it's really the guy in small print on the cover who wrote it.
I 19ve been reading Clive Cussler novels since 1CRaise the Titanic 1D I believe. A good friend of mine and myself really liked them and looked forward to new ones coming out. However, in the past several years, there has been a 1CCLIVE CUSSLER (large print) and someotherauthor (small print) 1D novel coming out every two or three months. I believe this will be the last of these I read, as they are not Clive Cussler novels. They 19re by the author in small print, and put out by what I call the 1CClive Cussler Novel Machine 1D. As soon as I finish this 1Creview 1D, I 19ll be removing Clive Cussler from the automatic reserve at the local library. We miss 18ya Clive, but come on, let your someotherauthor 19s have the headline billing on the front of these novels. Oh wait, that 19ll never happen, because sales will drop off precipitously.
