This was a delight! It is a bit on the long side for a middle grade graphic novel, but Dani and Dorian get into all sorts of hijinks that I think middle grade readers will enjoy. There are some darker moments in this storyline, but it reads similar to something like Percy Jackson. It fits for the audience it's intended for.

The art style reminds me a bit of manga, and there's a whimsy in this story that also feels sort of like a Studio Ghibli story. I am hooked by this little band of misfits, and I can't wait to see what they get up to in the next volume.

***It's hard for me to review Hooky in volumes, since I first fell in love with the Webtoon and think of it as a long continuous story. My review of Volume 3 will be the most comprehensive as a result!***

This comic about magical twins starts out with light-hearted hijinks as they make friends and adjust to life in a quaint town. Slowly but surely, you realize that the main theme of the story is discrimination against witches and the ripple effects it creates across their society. I understand why some reviewers feel that the story jumps around too much, since this is a reformatted version of the original episodic Webtoon (webcomic readers are used to time and/or scene jumps between one episode and the next).

While the storyline does get darker as Bonastre Tur explores this theme of discrimination, I was pleasantly surprised to see this series being marketed towards a middle-grade audience. I think readers of that age will love this story and characters, while learning a lot and identifying parallels to contemporary systemic oppression and long-running conflicts. If you have a middle grade reader in your life, I hope you both read and enjoy Hooky!

The first 6 chapters bored me to tears — the writing was awful, the characters two-dimensional and annoying. I wanted to DNF pretty much right away BUT I didn’t give up on it. The moment in Chapter 7 when Nico gets turned into a pixie (tint guy) really started to change the dynamic of the plot. The story got loads better, more authentic, more original, more heartfelt. The characters really grew on me too — Nico being my favourite. The art was pretty good too. I also loved the side-kick animal characters.

I absolutely adore the art style of this middle grade comic! ❤️ The characters are delightful too. The story is interesting, but the pacing really needs an editor. Some of the panels are also a bit confusing to read because the speech bubbles are out of order. Overall, I loved watching the action unfold and the story emerge from the woodwork even if it does take a long time to get there. Also enjoying having LGBTQ side characters.

This was a engaging story containing sweet characters with endearing personalities. The world building is nicely done too, and the mysteriousness involved throughout it held my interest to the last page. There are darker moments throughout the story but they're balanced out with light-hearted ones, alongside the optimism and friendship between the characters. I enjoyed how each one of them is working through their own insecurities and learning how to grow into their identities and new relationships. I also enjoyed the art throughout the book, funny and dramatic moments are paced well, and the characters are full of life and expression. I would recommend this to other readers, for both kids and adults alike.
