It’s a novella of 89 pages about love, kindness and gratitude. This book is so beautifully written that it felt so good while reading and I was kinda emerged in the story the whole time that I couldn’t put it down. The vivid description of rural Ireland adds beauty to this novella.

And… the ending… affection is what brings people closer. Parental love is beautifully captured here.

Quick short story read to get me in the mood for an upcoming Ireland trip! This was beautiful and tender and wrenching. I could see the imagery perfectly and feel the girl's feelings. I loved it.

"My heart does not so much feel that it is in my chest as in my hands, and that I am carrying it along swiftly, as though I have become the messenger for what is going on inside me."

An unassuming but stunning novella

For such a short story, Claire Keegan really drags you into the characters and their lives. Not a single sentence is wasted and the imagery is absolutely stunning. I definitely have to re-read this to fully grasp everything. For the first time ever, I wish this book had been one I'd studied in school haha

firstly, what a joy to listen to the Irish narrator! Such life is breathed into the characters and context as my own voice could not have achieved.

Heart-wrenching; thought-provoking, this book considers what it means to be a child, a parent, and a family.
What does it mean to be a father? And how can this bond span further than blood.
Innocence, love and loss reverberate through each sentence, captured flawlessly.

Keegan nails the open-ended ending, moving the writer to consider what exactly we expect and wish to happen. How does our own experience shape the outcome of this story?

Excellent use of metaphors and golden threads without any pretention.
The image of her own hand reaching to pull her into the well!!! The third light appearing; the running. All of it so effortlessly employed.
The book is short so one would not expect pacing to be a problem, but it is worth mentioning that the pace perfectly mirrored the intended atmosphere and mood - everything felt like belonging.
