This book reminded me quite a lot of [b:Thrust|59089701|Thrust|Lidia Yuknavitch|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1637602298l/59089701._SY75_.jpg|93175111] by Lidia Yuknavitch. Like Thrust, it's perspective moves across time, skipping between characters, and there is a dream-like quality to both the book's construction and its prose. The result, for me, wasn't quite as rapturous and mind-blowing, but it was still quite enjoyable and thought-provoking. Recommended.

This book had a lot of promising elements. I love a multigenerational family saga, a cautionary tale, or when the setting is the dystopian future. I also don't mind when a story becomes unusual or things take a turn for the unexpected.
Yet I could not bring myself to invest in the characters. A great many themes are explored, but don't feel compelling or fully developed.
Ultimately, this is an example of a premise that's more interesting than its execution. There are other books with similar concepts of survival amidst a collapsing society that are more memorable.
Moderate: Adult/minor relationship and Mental illness
Minor: Animal cruelty and Fire/Fire injury

Loved. Another one of those great books that is more than the sum of it's parts. More, please!
