There were several places where I felt like the book could and perhaps should have ended. Not as good as Nettle & Bone imo, but still worth a read.

I so wish I could go back in time and hand this book to my pre-teen self because I know it would have immediately become a favorite of all time. As it stands, I loved this book a whole lot. Specifically, the cast of characters really stole my heart. If you're looking for something whimsical and fun with just a splash of darkness, this is a great one to pick up, and I can see it become a comfort read for me moving forward.

A delicious adventure suitable for readers of all ages! Follow along as Mona, a young wizard with the special gift related to bread, unwittingly gets pulled into an adventure involving murder, royalty, and treasonous plots. With her trusty gingerbread golem and sourdough starter familiar, she will work with new friends to save the city and people they love.

A really enjoyable read. It’s a fairly dark story shown through a more lighthearted perspective. The protagonist is really likeable and sweet, and reading this book was just a really nice experience.

I love T. Kingfisher’s comically dark, oddly cozy fantasies, and A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking gets the recipe just right. Mona is a 14-year-old bread witch with a sourdough starter familiar—and she’d be just fine making gingerbread men dance at her aunt’s bakery if she hadn’t just found a dead body and gotten all mixed up in a wizard-killing plot that endangers her entire city. A wonderful fairy tale about how powerful your gifts are, no matter their shape or size, especially when you break the mold! Highly recommended for fans of Kiki’s Delivery Service, Legends & Lattes, and The Princess Bride!

This was a delight! I do love my baking and mystery with a little magic, or a lot of it. I don't think I've laughed my way through
war
before. If you love magic, baking, and plots to overthrow the government, read this.

An upbeat middle grade book with a darkish turn.
There’s death, war and violence, buy without the fear or gruesomeness.

Plot was great, but 2/3 into it it felt like the story had been split in 2, without a clear ending for the 1st.

Also the argument for
Oberon being banished instead of held in the dungeons
wasn’t strong enough.

P.D. Please beware, you can’t stop a fire (for minor that it looks) with flour. Please just asume all sorts of dust are flammable.
