I think the most impressive thing about this book is how it manages to spin so many plates at once. Futuristic worldbuilding that feels real, a touching romance, character growth, and a quick-moving plot with plenty of twists: that's a tall order for any standalone book to pull off. Yet it nails all these categories with aplomb. The book never feels less than authentic in its portrayal of class, other worlds, depression, identity, and more. And the prose keeps you riveted the whole way through, portraying a character who is flawed but relatable and heart-breakingly vulnerable. One of my new favorites.

Awesome book, with great ideas, brilliant world-building and thrilling plot.
I only wished for more Dell and had hoped to see her more, as i thought she was a great character with a glorious relationship to Cara. But there were also so many other fascinating characters that made the story so rich.
In the end, the world-building is what made this story so good.

Aside from a few moments where I really didn't believe/need the actions of certain characters (
Micheal becoming a runner, Adam not killing Cara, Dell bringing the collar to the burial
), this was a great story with relatable characters and a fascinating world with just enough detail. The first twist gave the story depth. Warm and engaging sci fi that also dives into some of the complexities of race/origin and how they impact one's lot in life.

Easy 5. I don't even know what to say because I am still reeling. This book was incredible and I read it in five days, which is very fast for me lately. It has occupied most of my brain space since I started it.

I loved the constant plot twists. Some I anticipated, some I didn't. Some were made all the more delicious by my anticipating them (the romantic ones, most specifically). At times, it felt like there were 3 books in this book. But it all hangs together beautifully.

The world is fascinating and well thought out. The characters are flawed, and felt very real. They were also charming to me. Perhaps a leaning a bit heavier on dark themes than I usually prefer, but that was the story. I don't question whether it works here. While at first I found the romantic tension a bit too reliant on the protagonist's self-hatred, I was hooked on their dynamic by the end. And again, that flaw makes sense for the character.

I really loved this book.
