me: i dont like time travel
book: how about parallel universes?
me: .... go on

seriously, i didnt know how i was going to feel about this book going in as scifi is really not my go-to genre but i kept seeing it around and then my spouse told me how good it was so i finally gave it a try. and oh did Micaiah Johnson have me ENTHRALLED. this was fun, funny, shocking, stressful, and just wonderful. the pacing was just a smidge bit off for me in parts, but i am so glad i read it and i absolutely will read the next book when it comes out, thank you.

I admit the rating only happened because I had such a high expectation for this book, and it was partly my fault. I was expecting a head-spinning romance that withstood the trial of time and multiverses (sounds so corny but I can't help it), and a plot so intricately and cleverly planned, with a twist that will take my breath away. I kept waiting for the ultimate twist, for the romance to finally take place and for the pining to be more than a few flirtatious words, but those never came.
The romance, especially—while it did have a few passages that gave me the urge to cry—wasn't explored enough until the last few chapters. Cara and Dell had been pining for 6 years, but they never actually communicate about literally anything, they never interacted much and instead Cara is off to another world "fraternizing" with people I absolutely don't care about. But the romance between Cara and Dell is sweet, if anything. It was partly my fault for expecting more romance here, because this book has more of the plot, multiverses, and characters exploration than the romance.
The overall concept is interesting enough, but I felt that the plot meandered a bit. While it was interesting to see the characters becoming different versions of people in other universe, it was simply too distracting and a bit convoluted, plus I didn't care enough about the side characters anyway.
Overall, still a nice and fun read if you're looking for a sci-fi book with a sapphic romance as a minor subplot.

In this sci-fi book, they have learned how to travel to other worlds in the multiverse. However, you cannot travel to another world where you already exist. So if you've died in another world you can travel there, but if you're still alive in that world you cannot go there. Our main character, Cara, can travel to almost all of the other possible worlds. This makes her an asset and allows her to work as someone who travels between all of the different worlds.

Cara is a likable main character with some noticeable flaws. These flaws feel authentic and real. It allows you to really connect with her and understand where she's coming from. Cara feels well developed and rounded out. She's also deeply intersectional, layered, and dynamic in a refreshing way. With that being said, many of the side characters felt slightly underdeveloped. While the story is from Cara's point of view, I wanted more from the side characters in terms of their relationship with Cara. Overall, I enjoyed the characterization and character growth throughout the novel.

As the story progresses it becomes obvious that this is not just a Sci-Fi novel but also a mystery, thriller, and romance as well. I personally found the blend between all of these to be perfect. I adored the explorations of race, class, religion, and power, and the social commentary on modern-day, real-word issues. I only wish that the ending hadn't felt a little flat.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it!

Aside from a few moments where I really didn't believe/need the actions of certain characters (
Micheal becoming a runner, Adam not killing Cara, Dell bringing the collar to the burial
), this was a great story with relatable characters and a fascinating world with just enough detail. The first twist gave the story depth. Warm and engaging sci fi that also dives into some of the complexities of race/origin and how they impact one's lot in life.

- lgbtqiap+, adult, sff, sci-fi, multiverse, world travelling, doppelgangers, royalty, badass mc, follows a one of a kind romance, quietly revolutionary!!,

HOLY ShIT!! this was exceptional!! 🤩
plot, characters, world building, the writing, the pace 5/5
the space between worlds is a delicious exploration of power and desire, to exist and to fight for you believe is right. it feels like one of those books that smacks you in the head with the harshness of reality despite it being a scifi book, with characters for whom i truly cared, and a story i kept thinking about, days after i finished reading the book!!
i'd be doing an injustice to this review (idk if you’d call it that bc this is just me shouting at you to go read this book) i did not mention the writing bc it was Beautiful and left me open like a raw wound!! 🤌
also the romance is top tier!! it doesnt take up a major portion of the book and is just the right amount of perfect, bittersweet and hopeful!!
YALL NEED TO GO READ THIS BOOK RN!!!
